Maidstone United 2 Worthing 0 FA Trophy match report: Stones set up Notts County tie in Fourth Round

A freak goal from Ryan Galvin and a late clincher from Jack Barham sent Maidstone through in the FA Trophy.

Galvin scored direct from a cross for a half-time lead against Worthing and Barham added an injury-time clincher to set up a trip to Notts County in Round Four.

Hakan Hayrettin had some thinking to do after Joe Ellul suffered an injury in the warm-up.

Christie Pattisson came into the starting XI, with Roarie Deacon dropping into right-back and George Fowler moving across to cover Ellul at centre-half.

Maidstone looked reasonably comfortable against their National South opponents without creating much in a quiet first half, although Barham did plenty of running up top.

The visitors looked to get Lewis White away down the left, but didn’t test Stones keeper Dan Barden, who was making his home debut after joining on loan from Norwich.

Kodi Lyons-Foster’s header from a Deacon free-kick was easily claimed by Harrison Male midway through the first half but you’d be pushing it to call it a genuine chance.

Maidstone did, though, go close towards the end of the first half when Dominic Odusanya headed narrowly wide after meeting Deacon’s corner in the 38th minute.

The opener followed three minutes later with Galvin scoring direct from a left-wing cross.

The celebration - or lack of it - confirmed it wasn’t intended but they all count and Maidstone had the lead.

Ollie Pearce put a dangerous ball across the face of goal for Worthing at the start of the second half, while Josh Chambers hit the side-netting.

There was a decent chance at the other end when Sam Corne nodded a Deacon free-kick back across goal to Barham, who put the ball over in the six-yard box.

Another Deacon free-kick was headed wide by Bivesh Gurung when well-placed but there was a warning for the Stones when Chambers struck the bar.

Maidstone were starting to live dangerously as Worthing pushed for a leveller, being forced back by the visitors.

The Rebels worked the ball well and got into some good areas but lacked a killer touch in the box.

Their hopes were ended in the second minute of added time when Barham went through one-on-one and finished coolly.
