Joe Pigott scored a 95th-minute equaliser to keep Maidstone in the FA Cup after a tale of three penalties.

Zavon Hines had one spot-kick ruled out in bizarre circumstances and saw a second saved while Darren Purse converted to leave Bostik Premier Enfield on the brink of reaching round one.

But deep into added time, Jamar Loza - making his comeback from injury - hit the post and Pigott pounced for the leveller.

Earlier, Town led through Simon Thomas but Alex Wynter levelled in the final minute of the first half.

A push by Dan Rumens on Delano Sam-Yorke in just the second minute gave United their first penalty.

Hines stepped up but feinted to shoot after completing his run-up, committing keeper Joe Wright, before rolling the ball into the opposite corner.

Referee Wayne Cartmel booked Hines for unsporting behaviour and awarded Town a free-kick, with plenty of debate over whether he should have been allowed to retake the spot-kick.

United were largely on top early on, Joe Pigott testing Wright from a free-kick, but it wasn’t happening in the final third and they were punished as Town took a 19th-minute lead.

It came after Hines lost possession, with Enfield breaking through Montel Moore before Mickey Parcell’s cross to the far post was headed in by captain Simon Thomas.

Sam-Yorke had a header tipped over and Jack Paxman missed the target before Stones were awarded their second penalty on 38 minutes.

Lewis was taken down by Ryan Blackman and this time Wright saved Hines’ kick.

It was hard work for Maidstone, so congested in the middle, but they hauled themselves level in the final minute of the first half, Wynter’s header from a Seth Twumasi cross going in off the post.

United almost grabbed the lead in injury time, Wright down well after Twumasi teed up Lewis on the edge of the area.

Maidstone bossed the start of the second half, Hines feeding Sam-Yorke whose shot hit the inside of the post, then Lewis missed when well-placed from Paxman’s cut-back.

Enfield were starting to look tired but they had a spring in their step when they were awarded a penalty of their own on 56 minutes.

Ollie Muldoon was the man penalised and veteran Purse, who converted a 90th-minute spot-kick for Birmingham against Liverpool in the 2001 League Cup final, sent Lee Worgan the wrong way.

Enfield defended in numbers but there were still chances for Maidstone, substitute Johan ter Horst fluffing Twumasi’s cross and seeing Wright save his header seconds later, then Lewis fired over after good work by Loza.

Enfield were on the verge of reaching the first round for the first time when Pigott salvaged a replay.
