Maidstone United forward Zavon Hines has penalty disallowed for feinting to shoot

Jay Saunders was as puzzled as anyone after Zavon Hines had a penalty disallowed for feinting to shoot in Maidstone’s FA Cup draw with Enfield.

Hines, having committed keeper Joe Wright, rolled the ball in the opposite corner but was booked for unsporting behaviour with no retake allowed.

It happened in just the second minute of Saturday’s final qualifying round tie at the Gallagher, a match that ended 2-2 thanks to Joe Pigott’s injury-time equaliser.

Saunders said: “If you asked anyone on that pitch today, or any of the dugouts, I don’t think anyone knew that rule and the booking kills you because he can’t make a tackle for the rest of the game.

“I didn’t know about it but there you go. Apparently it’s a new rule this season.

“I always thought you could do what Zav did. It’s only this year that it’s changed.

“If you can trick a goalkeeper then fair play but it is what it is.”

Maidstone were a goal down when Hines had a second chance from the penalty spot - but this time his kick was saved.

Saunders felt Hines was right to step up again. He said: “He’s the penalty taker so I had no issue with it.

“A couple of people next to me in the crowd were saying Pigs should have taken it but Zavon’s your penalty taker. He’s scored the first one, it’s just that it was a foul if you like.”

Saunders was pleased with Maidstone’s performance against Bostik Premier Enfield but thought they were on their way out at 2-1 down in the last minute of added time.

They have another chance on Tuesday, however, with Pigott reacting quickest after Jamar Loza hit the post following a tricky run.

It was Loza’s first appearance of the season after ankle surgery and Saunders said: “I think that sums it up in that moment in that he can do something other people can’t.

“It was a big ask for him coming on but you just feel if you can get him one-on-one with people in those areas he’ll get a shot off or get you an assist.

“You can see he’s a little way off fitness but the only way he’s going to get fitness is by playing games.

“I thought we played some great stuff.

“The last 10 or 15 minutes became scrappy but we kept going and a bit of magic from Jam and Pigs has done what he should do and that’s follow in.”
