On-loan QPR defender Alex Finney would happily extend stay at Maidstone United

Maidstone are the team Alex Finney wants to play for if QPR decide to keep him out on loan.

Finney’s deal at the Gallagher runs out in January and while the defender has started only two games, he would be happy to stay.

A groin injury cost him his place and he’s had to be patient, with Magnus Okuonghae and Alex Wynter hitting it off in central defence.

But QPR have had no complaints so hopefully nothing would stand in the way of Finney extending his loan.

He said: “QPR just want to make sure that I’m ready for when I get thrown in and make sure I’m well-equipped.

“There’s regular contact there. I go in every Friday and every Sunday to train and I see all the boys.

“There’s a good group of lads here. Staying on is something I would look at.

“I think it would be a good opportunity because we’ve got the potential to kick on and try and get promoted.

“It’s a conversation I’ll have with QPR and see where we go.

“They’re my parent club and my main aim is to get into that team but if it’s not there then I’d love it to be here.”

Finney got his chance against Guiseley on Saturday with Okuonghae forced off inside 20 minutes with a hip injury.

He threw himself into an aerial battle against big forwards and made himself heard.

The 21-year-old looked set to be rewarded with a clean sheet until Guiseley’s injury-time penalty.

Finney said: “It’s probably the most physical game of the season so far.

“It was there, we could see it, it’s just unfortunate that we didn’t get all three points, which I think we deserved.

“As a footballer you have to be ready for everything.

“As soon as Mags went down the first time, the gaffer told me just to be ready."

Depending on Okuonghae’s fitness, Finney could start for the first time since August when United play Enfield in the FA Cup on Saturday.

If he gets the nod it’ll be his first-ever appearance in the competition.

He said: “Who plays is down to the gaffer, whatever he thinks, and everyone respects his decision.

“I haven’t actually played in the FA Cup.

“I’ve played in the League Cup but it’s something I’d love to do as a footballer, especially here with a great group of lads. Fingers crossed I can get some minutes.

“You see last year with Sutton playing Arsenal, anything can happen.”
