Goalkeeper Lee Worgan keeps Gosport at bay for clean sheet on 100th Maidstone United league appearance

Lee Worgan marked his 100th league appearance for Maidstone by keeping a clean sheet.

Keeper Worgan was aware of the milestone ahead of Stones’ goalless draw at Gosport, but kept it to himself as a superb save from Justin Bennett’s second-half header secured a third clean sheet of the season.

Worgan hasn’t missed a league game since joining from Tonbridge two years ago and said: “It was my dad who said I must be coming up to 100.

"I had a look and realised Gosport would be the one. I didn’t want to jinx anything, so I kept quiet about it until after the game.

“It was nice to make that save and get the clean sheet. They caught us out a little bit with some deep crosses but Jamie Coyle’s done well to put him off the header and I’ve been able to keep it out.”

United have conceded only six goals in eight games since promotion – the fourth-best record in National League South – and Worgan has been faultless behind a strong back four.

He said: “When you go up a level you give yourself six games to see how you feel and personally I’ve felt comfortable and, if anything, a bit more confident.

"You’re going to come up against better players, but a big part of being a goalkeeper is reading what a striker’s going to do and that can be harder lower down where the players are more raw."
