Maidstone United manager Jay Saunders on Jay May's wonder goal against Bath City

Jay Saunders feared the linesman’s flag was about to ruin one of the great Maidstone goals.

A 14-pass move, involving every United player bar Jack Paxman, was started and finished by Jay May for a 1-0 win against Bath on Saturday.

Stones worked the ball all the way back to keeper Lee Worgan before rebuilding a move that ended with Matt Bodkin exchanging passes with Callum Driver and sending over a cross for May to chest down and finish with a superb volley.

Boss Saunders said: “You’re not going to get much better than that. It’s a hell of a goal and a great finish by Jay as well.

“My first reaction when it was crossed was that he was offside but apparently the full-back was playing him on.

“It’s good to watch and we’ve been playing some good stuff the last few games.”

As impressive as the goal was, Saunders felt his side should have punished Bath with more of the same while on top in the first half.

He said: “I thought they were there to score two or three against if we’d switched play a bit quicker but we took too many touches.

“I'm just a bit disappointed we didn't take advantage because it was on to do it more.

“Second half they really came at us and tested us and you’ve got to give them full credit for that. They’re a good side and it’s a big three points.”

Bath, who arrived at the Gallagher Stadium second in National League South, were denied an equaliser by a stunning Lee Worgan save late in the first half.

They dominated after the break but couldn't find a way past a Stones defence who have gone almost seven hours without conceding.

Saunders said: “It says it all that they packed the midfield out to try and stop us playing. I thought that worked for them the more the game went on.

“Second half we just couldn't get on the ball, they didn't give us time to settle, they pressed us high up the pitch and it became very difficult for us to get hold of things.

“Don’t get me wrong, we’re getting the odd bit of luck here and there with deflections and that but when you’re working that hard defensively and you've got Lee Worgan in goal, you deserve what you get.

“If they’d nicked one, you don’t know what would have happened but, at the moment, we’re defending well and we look like we can hurt teams going forward.”

Stones are waiting for news on Alex Brown’s knee injury.

The midfielder had been on a matter of minutes when he was injured making a challenge.

Saunders said: “His medial ligaments gave way a little bit. We’re hoping it won’t be too bad.

"It’s something he’s had before. When I first signed him he was coming back from it at Gills.”
