The horrible habit of spitting in the street has been outlawed in Maidstone – thanks to your campaigning Kent Messenger.

After months of the paper calling for on-the-spot fines, street wardens are now issuing £75 tickets to offenders throughout the borough after Maidstone Council backed our campaign.

The spitting fines have been introduced in addition to existing penalties for urinating or vomiting in the street.

Editor Denise Eaton has hailed the move by Maidstone Borough Council as a victory for the town and its good name.

She said: “Each individual has a duty to treat each other, and our surroundings, with courtesy and respect."

So far wardens have ticketed a dozen people in just a fortnight and the KM's campaign has won praise from councillors and officials from Town Centre Management.
