Upper-crust custard warriors are pie high

Teams soon got plastered with flying flans when the World Custard Pie Championships hit the headlines again.

Twenty-one squads, many wearing fancy dress, threw 2,300 pies during 50 matches in this year’s messy contest at the Kent Showground, Detling, on Sunday.

The contest, which was revived last year by former Maidstone mayor and Independent councillor Mike FitzGerald, was won by the kmfm team of radio presenters led by Ant Payne. His fellow team members were Kevin Field, Benedict Smith and Danny Williams.

They beat the We Don’t Like Asparagus team from Nottingham by one point in a closely fought final.
