Pupils and staff initially gathered on the school field following an evacuation of the building by the school while the search was carried out.

The school took the decision to send all pupils home.

Officers also went to Bower Grove School in Fant Lane, Maidstone, after they received a telephone call at 10.15am.

They were carrying out searches at the scene and pupils were moved to West Borough Primary School as a precaution. All children and staff are safe and have been accounted for.

Officers left the scene shortly after 1pm.

The special school caters for more than 200 students aged between four and 16 with behaviour, learning, and communication difficulties.

Police have since confirmed two further schools received menacing phone calls that suggested a man was in the area with a firearm.

Officers attended Stella Maris Primary School and Sandgate Primary School after the schools received the calls at around 11.30am.

But both schools are remaining open after searches were carried out.

Stella Maris headteacher Tony Holdsworth said the school received an "anonymous malicious phone call" earlier today and immediately notified police.

He added: "I will be sending a letter to parents this afternoon."

Nobody from Sandgate Primary School was available for comment.

A police spokesman said: "All of today's calls are being reviewed in connection with calls that have been received by establishments nationally.

"At this stage there's not any additional information to release."

The bomb scare comes after a series of similar incidents on Monday, where threats were made to 27 schools across the UK.

Barming Primary School was one of those affected, and 400 pupils were evacuated.

A menacing caller also rang Canterbury Academy to say there was a bomb on site and "the shrapnel will take children’s heads off".

Pupils were pulled from class – including 240 sitting a GCSE English exam.

Police were called to both schools, where painstaking searches of the buildings were carried out but nothing found.

Yesterday officers were investigating what turned out to be a hoax relating to an Ashford school's sports day.

The threat was allegedly made by a student.
