Travellers who moved on to a public car park were staying put today despite being told to move on.
The families with some six caravans and associated vehicles moved into the car park on the Sittingbourne Road at its junction with Holland Road, which backs on to the East Borough School site earlier this week.
A Maidstone council spokesman said: "Maidstone council served notice on the travellers which expired yesterday and have been working with Kent Police to deal with the situation. Kent Police have also served notice on them to move on; that notice expires today. The council and police are doing all they can within their powers to deal with the situation."
