Travellers moved on from Maidstone car park after third time pitching up in six months

Travellers who moved into a car park near Maidstone Leisure Centre last week have now moved on.

Kent Police were called on Thursday, March 29 to reports of a "traveller incursion" in Willow Way after at least 10 caravans were spotted.

The force says that the group left the site yesterday shortly before 1pm.

This was the third time they had been seen in the same place in six months - settling there in September and November.

Georgie Grassom, communications manager at Maidstone Borough Council, which owns the land, said: "We went out on Thursday and did the relevant welfare checks and issued a section 77 notice to give them 24 hours to leave."

Meanwhile, staff at the leisure centre believe the decision to move on was down to disputes between those camped at the car park.

Gareth Gates, duty manager, said: "I heard that the travellers were fighting among one another and moved on then."
