Three dead in road accident

Witnesses are being sought after three people died in a crash on the A20 at Wrotham.

The accident, in which a car collided with a pick-up truck, happened on Sunday, December 20 at around 4pm.

A Mercedes C200 travelling up Wrotham Hill on the A20, was involved in a collision with a Toyota Hi-Lux travelling in the opposite direction.

A 48-year-old male passenger in the Toyota Hi-Lux, from the Gravesend area died. The driver of the Mercedes, aged 63, from Lee, London and a female passenger aged 78, from Barnhurst in Kent, also died.

The male driver and two female passengers from the Toyota pick-up truck were taken to Maidstone Hospital. Their injuries are serious but not thought to be life-threatening.

A post mortem exam is due to take place on Wednesday, December 23.

The A20 was closed overnight on Sunday and reopened at 7am on Monday, December 21.

The stretch of road where the accident happened is where the A20 climbs up a hill towards West Kingsdown, after the road crosses the M20 motorway.

One resident of Wrotham Hill, who asked not to be named, said: "It happened on the stretch of road parallel with Old Coach Road, which overlooks the A20.

"It is a busy part of the A20 and well used by locals and traffic from out of the area. It can get really busy if there is a hold up or problem on the M20, or M26, which are nearby."

Kent Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit is appealing for any witnesses to the collision, or who saw the vehicles prior to the incident, to phone 01622 798538.

Conditions for travellers remained extremely hazardous on Monday morning as fresh snowfall settled onto compacted ice.
