Some areas of Maidstone have hardly changed in generations, but occasionally a picture crops up which shows how dramatically the town has expanded in the last century.

This is one such picture, taken by the Kent Messenger in 1922, showing the widening of the Loose Road in progress. The work was carried out by unemployed workers at the time. The picture shows oast houses in Plains Avenue.
