Crowds at Maidstone East railway station to see The Cathedrals Express steam train

A steam train drew a crowd of around 100 people when it pulled into Maidstone East railway station today.

The Cathedrals Express was stopping off in the town as part of a circular tour around the county, passing through the Kent Downs and alongside the White Cliffs of Dover.

One of just 18 surviving Black 5 locomotives engines, 'The Lancashire Fusilier' was built in 1937 and was used mostly on the Midland Main Line.

The train will be welcoming passengers on board for a Christmas lunch, mince pies and mulled wine among its festively decorated vintage carriages.

Steam Dreams’ chairman, Marcus Robertson, said: “Our circular trips are always very popular and our Christmas tour around the White Cliffs is one of the highlights of our festive calendar."
