Spillage causes motorway misery

A TOILET cleaner spillage caused traffic chaos on a motorway slip road, and stranded children returning from a school trip.

Emergency crews were called to attend to a large quantity of green liquid at the Running Horse Roundabout on the A229, Ringlestone, Maidstone, shortly after noon on Thursday.

The M20 slip road, A229 slip road, and junction 6 of the London-bound M20 were all closed for several hours while Highways officers dealt with the spillage, which was thought to have come from a lorry.

A coach carrying school children back from the Museum of Kent Life, Sandling, became stranded on one of the slip roads and was forced to wait until the road surface had been cleaned.

A police spokeswoman said that although it was not treated as a chemical hazard, the substance could have caused skidding if it came into contact with water.

The road was fully reopened at 3.40pm.
