Snowfall in mid Kent

Transport may be struggling to take the strain...but for some the weekend has been an enjoyable winter wonderland.

Photographer Matthew Walker captured these images of snow fun, but also the work of villagers in Lenham who took to the streets armed with brooms to try and clear a path through the white stuff.

After heavy snow on Sunday train services were badly affected as commuters struggled into work.

Services across the network have been delayed or cancelled as Network Rail battles to clear lines.

Trains throughout the morning were affected, including ones from Gillingham, Margate, Sevenoaks and Dover.

Southeastern yesterday said it would be running a regular timetable today, but cancelling some early morning services.

That was so those carriages could be used to run longer trains, making them potentially less likely to fail.

But chaos ensued today, with many trains unable to take the strain.

A spokesman said: “Despite Network Rail’s best efforts overnight to clear the tracks, ice on the conductor rail is causing problems for services on some routes.

"We’re dependent on the rails being cleared to run a train service for customers. We apologise to anyone caught up in delays and thank them for their patience”

Additional staff have been brought in to clear snow from platforms and steps.

On the roads, heavy snowfalls across west and north Kent yesterday have led to disruption on a number of Arriva bus routes.

An update at 8am from the firm said the following:

Maidstone and Malling:
72 not able to serve St. Katherine's Lane and is running to Snodland Bull via the High street
82 not able to serve Highcroft Green and Bell Road so running from Park Wood Parade via Wallace Avenue and Sutton Road
89 are all turning at East Farleigh and not via Park Way
570 at 0714 from Wrotham will start from West Malling and is unable to serve Wrotham or Borough Green

Forecasters today predicted a continued chill across Kent and the rest of the region, with some sleet and snow at times

Temperatures are unlikely to peak above zero, and a weather warning remains in place.

Gritters have been out in force overnight and earlier today, but some roads were said to be hazardous.

Experts are warning drivers not to make any unnecessary journeys.
Meanwhile, more than 170 schools were closed across Kent and Medway this morning, with youngsters set to make the most of the big freeze to build snowmen and throw snowballs.

Hardest hit were Dover and Maidstone, with more than 20 schools closed in each area.

It comes after a day of prolonged snowfall yesterday across the county.
