Smoking lorry

An overheated lorry caused rush hour delays in Maidstone town centre this morning.

The HGV stopped in Bishops Way at 8.10am after smoke started to spill out of its engine.

Two Kent Fire and Rescue Service crews attended but no action was needed. They left the scene after 10 minutes.

A fire spokeswoman said the smoke was caused by overheated batteries.

The parked lorry caused queues in the surrounding area, including the one-way system.

A recovery vehicle has been called.
