David McPherson, from Nettlestead near Maidstone, has been selected to ride in the World Equestrian Games at the beginning of October.

The leading British showjumper will be riding his own horse, Chamberlain Z, at the event in Kentucky.

"It’s an amazing horse but we need to do it correctly and don’t want to over-do it," said the 50-year-old. "It’s going to be a fabulous experience for the horse.

"The jumps are big and we need to be careful. We need to give the horse experience without frightening it.

"I’m delighted to have been chosen as part of the team. It’s a fabulous young horse who has incredible potential for the future."

McPherson is no stranger to the big stage, having been a leading showjumper for many years and he’s helping to build a pool of talented horses ahead of the 2012 Olympics.

Chamberlain Z could be set for big things and McPherson has not ruled out an appearance at the Olympics in London himself in 2012, providing he can beat the back problems which are hindering him.

"There are several riders coming to the end of their careers and to go to the Olympics would be fantastic," he said.

"It’s so important to develop a pool of new horses for future championships. Taking part in WEG will be a great experience for Chamberlain Z and I have high hopes for Kentucky."
