Remembrance services in and around Maidstone

Here is where you can pay your respects to those who have died or fought in conflicts across the world.

A minute's silence will be held today to remember those who have died fighting for their country in The Mall Chequers, Maidstone at 11am today – Armistice Day.

A short ceremony will be held in Fremlin Walk starting with the sounding of the Last Post by bugler Barry Knight, a veteran bandsman of the Queen’s Own Royal West Kent Regiment. The Exhortation will then be read by Jock Shearer, customer liaison officer for Fremlin Walk, who served with the Second Battalion of the Scots Guards.

Maroon flares will be fired at 11am in Tonbridge town centre and at 11.02am in West Malling.

In Tunbridge Wells, the Royal British Legion will stand silently in front of the war memorial in Mount Pleasant Road.

On Remembrance Sunday, in Maidstone, a parade of more than 700 people, including soldiers from 36 Engineer Regiment (Search), the Maidstone branch of the Royal British Legion and the British Army Association will march through the town. Starting from Week Street at 10.30am, the procession will lead to the cenotaph in The Broadway for a service and wreath-laying ceremony before returning to the town centre, where the Mayor of Maidstone, Cllr Brian Mortimer, will take the salute at 11.25am.

A short service and wreath-laying ceremony will be held in the Remembrance Gardens, Bradford Street, Tonbridge at 10.45am, followed by a parade to St Peter & St Paul for the town’s Service of Remembrance, at 11.45am.

In West Malling, a parade will begin at the saluting base, with the Mayor of Tonbridge and Malling, Cllr Brian Luker, taking the salute in the High Street at 2pm followed by a parade to St Mary’s Church where the Service of Remembrance will be held at 2.30pm. There will also be a wreath-laying ceremony at the war memorial.

In Aylesford, the Royal British Legion Village Branch’s Remembrance Day parade and service will be held in the Garden of Remembrance at 2.45pm, while the Royal British Legion Shepway and Park Wood Branch will hold theirs at Maidstone Cemetery, Sutton Road, at 3pm.

In Tunbridge Wells at 10.45am there will be a service at the war memorial in Mount Pleasant Road, during which the Mayor and others including Greg Clark MP (Con) will lay wreaths.

Remembrance ceremonies also take place in villages across west Kent, including Cranbrook and Paddock Wood.
