ACTOR Michael Fenton Stevens, who was due to play Dame Trott in this year's pantomime in Maidstone, has had to pull out.

New World Productions, the producers of this year’s Hazlitt Arts Centre pantomime Jack and the Beanstalk, issued a statement saying the actor was leaving.

It said: "It is with great sadness that New World has to announce that actor and TV star Michael Fenton Stevens who plays Dame Trott will be leaving the show.

"Unfortunately due to health reasons Michael has been forced to leave and his final performance will be no later than December 12."

Producer Gary Telfer said: “We all knew Michael had been unwell during the rehearsal period, as a professional in the business he continued until the show had opened and hoped he would start to feel better.

"On his first available day off he visited his doctor. Unfortunately Michael has been advised that his illness is much worse than even he suspected.

"He has a severe throat and chest infection which must have rest and will take some time to clear up fully.

“I have spoken to Michael and his agent in some depth about this situation and we are all agreed that his health should be the priority in this situation and that Michael should be replaced from the show as soon as possible.

"We wish him well and hope he makes a speedy recovery”.

BBC Radio Kent presenter and pantomime veteran Paul Harris will take over the role.

Director Guy Pascall said: “It is very sad to see Michael go, however, I’m thrilled Paul Harris is able to take over as he is an extremely experienced dame who will be able to take the role with the minimum of fuss and we know it’s in a safe pair of hands."
