Our own Covent Garden?

The sound of sweet music will be resonating around the County Town from Saturday when a designated buskers’ spot is launched.

Buskers - Spot 1 is in Market Buildings and will be the place to see musical talent.

It is all part of plans to pedestrianise Market Buildings to expand the café culture and create Maidstone’s own version of Covent Garden.

Singers, musicians, dancers and actors will all be performing between noon and 3pm on Saturday to mark the event and create a memorable day.

Video-media artist Margherita Gramegna will cut a ribbon to formally launch Buskers - Spot 1.

She is the brains behind Maidstone documentary, Artists Don’t Bite, which features interviews with creative people in the town expressing their visions for a Maidstone Artists’ Quarter.

She said: “Artists Don’t Bite has managed, with the assistance of Art at the Centre and Maidstone Town Centre Management, to achieve a change in the town to the benefit of artists.

“For me Spot 1 is a great achievement. It really feels like the beginning of something bigger to come.”

Spot 1 will be available every Saturday between 11am and 3pm for artists, musicians and performers to use as a creative spot to showcase their talent.

In the near future, it will also be licensed for artists to sell their wares.
