Witnesses said that about30 to 40 people were gathered in Lower Stone Street at the time.

One man was stabbed and lay motionless near the junction by the Miller Heights tower block as paramedics worked on him for a lengthy period.

He was taken by air ambulance to a London hospital, where officers have confirmed he is in a stable condition.

The road was sealed off yesterday morning, between Romney Place and Wat Tyler Way, while forensic officers went to work.

It reopened just after 3pm.
