Part of Sutton Road in Maidstone closed for a week due to telecomms works

Motorists in part of the town can expect more traffic woes as part of a busy road closes for a week.

Drivers are being told to expect delays and lane closures at the junction of Sutton Road and Wallis Avenue in Maidstone, near the Esso garage.

It comes as MBNL telecommunications carries out daily work in the area.

The work is set to begin at 9.30am every morning until 2.30pm up until Monday, November 7.

The delays comes after motorists have faced weeks of slow traffic at the Armstrong Road and Park Way junctions of the road as Kent County Council tries to fix congestion problems on the road.

Alterations to Park Way and to Armstrong Road, two roads leading into the A229 Loose Road and Sutton Road, began on October 3 and are expected to last eight weeks.

Park Way is a popular route for traffic coming from the south of Maidstone to reach Mote Park, the Maidstone Leisure Centre and Maidstone Grammar School and there is sure to be pressure on other roads in the area as drivers seek to find an alternative route.

Similarly, Armstrong Road forms part of the route for traffic coming from Tonbridge Road and the East Farleigh area, wishing to head towards Staplehurst, while avoiding the town centre. They too may find their route frustrated.

Residents in the area have been plagued with road works in the past year, especially the closure of Cranborne Avenue, near the former Wheatsheaf.

It was closed in April as part of a six month experiment due to future works at the now closed pub.
