Ironing to blame for flat fire

A man came home to find firefighters tackling a blaze in his living room.

The fire broke out at 3.30pm this afternoon at a flat in Buckland Hill, Maidstone.

Two crews from Maidstone attended.

Four firefighters entered the building using breathing apparatus and found an iron had been left on.

The blaze caused considerable damage, although it was not thought to be structural.

Watch manager, Greg Theophanides, said: "Having ironed a T-shirt the man then went out, leaving the iron on. He returned as we were tackling the fire and was naturally very shocked and upset."
