Some 14 police officers were sent to the historic venue after proceedings descended into violence. It is believed to be the first time in living memory police had to be called to a Kent inquest.

The fight, which allegedly saw chairs thrown and a police officer grabbed by the shirt, broke out during a break in the hearing for one-year-old Jimmy Robinson, who died in June 2017 after suffering a possible cardiac arrest at his mother’s home.

The infant's father and grandad Tommy and James Robinson, his mother's partner Joe Elkington-Rose, and Shane Ince appeared at Maidstone Crown Court to deny the charges in June.

James Robinson, 51, of North Dane in Chatham, is also charged with assaulting a police officer.

Tommy Robinson 22, of Connaught Road and Shane Ince, 33, of Wayfield Road - both Chatham - and Elkington-Rose, 24, of St Paul's Close in Strood, are due to stand trial at Maidstone Crown Court from this morning.
