Gay wedding show success in Maidstone for KC Weddings and Events

Kent's first gay wedding show in 14 years welcomed a drag queen, Fonda Cox to the catwalk and was a big hit.

More than 60 same-sex couples attended the Maidstone event last weekend, among 100 couples in total.

Organisers and partners, Marcus Collings and Daniel Kyte were thrilled with the response.

Mr Kyte, 37, said: "It went amazingly. We were not too sure what the turn out would be, but can safely say the show actually worked. We were very impressed - we even had one pair come all the way from north London."

With 50 stalls, the fair had almost everything, but the main event was the catwalk.

Drag queen, Fonda Cox, wore a sequin mini dress while belting out classic tunes and was joined by a number of other male and female models.

The KC Weddings and Events business owners say only around 5% of same sex couples attend the average wedding show.

Mr Collings, 51, who has been running events for nearly 20 years, said: “When looking for a wedding venue it is about feeling comfortable. All our suppliers were gay friendly and we hoped it would encourage more gay couples to come along.”

Chilston Park Hotel in Maidstone was the last Kent venue to host a gay wedding or civil partnership event in 2005.

Latest national figures reveal at 146 Kent had the second highest number of same-sex marriages in the South East in one year, beaten only by Brighton & Hove with 201, so it seems there is gap in the market.

The Ashford-based business was targeting gay couples but assured everyone was welcome.

The pair hope the show, held in Mercure Maidstone Great Danes Hotel on Sunday, March 3, is the first of many.

Mr Kyte added: "The feedback from people was absolutely excellent. Everyone was saying how different and unique it was. We are most definitely going to make it an annual thing."

KC Weddings and Event's next show, with no sexual orientation specified, will be in Ashford International Hotel on Sunday, September 15.
