Gallery: The future of Maidstone High Street

A grand stone archway, like the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, could one day stand proud at the entrance to Maidstone High Street.

It is one of 76 ideas unveiled this week for how to spend £4 million to improve the town centre.

Maidstone council has invited architects to draw up their ideas for how to spend the money.

A shortlist of the five best designs will be revealed in this Friday’s Kent Messenger, and readers will be invited to have their say.

A panel of judges last week went through all 76 entries, which ranged from simple plans to pedestrianise the High Street to some more ambitious efforts.

A gallery of some of the ideas can be viewed above.

The winning design will become a reality, with £4 million of funding provided through Maidstone’s status as a Growth Point.

Don’t miss this Friday’s Kent Messenger for more details about the shortlisted plans.
