Future of Cornell jewellers in Maidstone uncertain after shop in Gabriel's Hill goes on the market for £500,000

The future of a 226-year-old town centre jewellers is uncertain after the building it occupies was put up for sale.

Cornell & Sons was opened in 1796 and currently operates in Gabriel's Hill, Maidstone.

Having been open for more than two centuries in the town its future is now in doubt after the landlord of the site put the building on the market for £500,000.

Advertised on Rightmove, the 2,646 sq ft structure was described as being a "historic town centre property".

It is a Grade II-listed building, between Atilla kebab house and Gem Antiques, which is in a "prominent position in the county town of Kent".

Cornells is an independent jeweller which describes itself as an "integral part of the local community".

The company says: "We have evolved over the past two centuries to cater to an ever-changing retail jewellery market, working with and supporting a diverse network of suppliers, manufacturers, and skilled craftsmen.

"Our in-house jeweller has over 40 years’ experience to draw upon when crafting a personal and distinctive piece of jewellery.

"In addition to this, we pride ourselves on being a friendly and professional team, with a wealth of experience and knowledge."

A director for the jewellers confirmed they did not want to leave the site in Gabriel's Hill and were in negotiations with the landlord, but could not go into further detail.

While its most expensive ring for sale online is an 18ct yellow gold and platinum cut diamond solitaire ring, costing £6,995.
