Van catches alight in 'suspicious' circumstances near Fox and Goose pub in Maidstone

A fire which saw a van catch alight near a pub is believed to have been started in "suspicious" circumstances.

It happened in the car park of the Fox and Goose in Weavering Street, Weavering, Maidstone, on Monday.

Firefighters were called at 4.41pm.

The vehicle had been parked there since 9am.

A police spokesman said: "Kent Police were notified by the Kent Fire and Rescue Service at 5.30pm on Monday that a vehicle fire was believed to be suspicious and police attendance was requested."

Enquiries surrounding the incident are ongoing.

A Kent Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: "Kent Fire and Rescue Service was called to reports of a van alight in Weavering Street, near Bearsted, Maidstone."

He said: "One fire engine attended and crews wearing breathing apparatus used a hose reel jet to extinguish the flames.

"No casualties were reported. The cause is not yet known."

But landlady Jan Williams said there was no mystery about the fire.

She said: "It was an electrical fault in a van belonging to one of my regulars here."
