Leeds Castle falconer Mark Brattle from Milton Regis nominated for the Tourism Superstar Award by VisitEngland

Staff at Leeds Castle are all in a flap, after the attraction’s head falconer became the first ever person from Kent to be nominated as a tourism superstar.

Mark Brattle has been shortlisted for the award by tourist board VisitEngland, alongside nine other candidates ranging from a hotel doorman to a zoo keeper to a historical re-enactor.

The 32-year-old has been ruffling feathers since arriving at the castle three years ago, and has built up a collection of more than 20 birds, covering 16 different species of owl, falcon, eagle, hawk and even a kookaburra.

He is reponsible for the care, training and flying of the birds of prey, and entertains and educates visitors with free flying displays and demonstrations.

The Tourism Superstar Award, supported by the Daily Mirror, was launched three years ago as part of English Tourism Week to recognise the dedication and passion of those who go above and beyond to ensure visitors have unforgettable experiences.

Chief executive for Leeds Castle, Bill Lash, said he was very proud that Mark had been shortlisted and hoped that visitors would support Kent tourism by voting for him.

“Mark’s enthusiasm for birds of prey, his desire to impart knowledge and his dedication to the job, make him a huge favourite with our visitors and staff at Leeds Castle,” he said.

“He is there from dawn til dusk and if the baby owls need extra care, they go home with him to be fed every four hours.”

Mr Brattle was hooked on wildlife after he saw his first falcon display aged three.

He told the Kent Messenger: “It is amazing to be nominated and completely out of the blue. I love working with birds and I’m so privileged to be working at such a fantastic location, especially being Maidstone born and bred, being able to educate and entertain.

“I do look after our baby owls so in a way I do take my work home with me, but it is really nice. They sit on my lap while I watch TV.”

He added: “I have no words to explain how I would feel to win.”

People can vote online from January 31, and the winner will be announced on March 14.
