A schoolboy from Walderslade who hopes to one day study medicine is celebrating after passing four GCSE subjects despite only being 14.

Michael Ogwueleka, who is in Year 9 at St Simon Stock Catholic School in Maidstone, collected his results yesterday to find he achieved a grade 4 in chemistry and biology, and a grade 5 in physics two years earlier than his classmates.

He already passed his maths GCSE aged 13 securing a grade 5, equivalent to a high C and low B on the old grading system.

Michael has a passion for science and his parents say they put him forward for the exams privately at London Brookes College after he expressed an interest in pursuing a career in the subject.

His father Maduka Ogwueleka is a physician and knows exactly what it takes to practice medicine. The exams were a way of taking the pressure off Michael so he knows what to expect in the coming years.

Proud mum Chioma Ogwueleka said: "He has always loved his sciences and it's something he is passionate about.

"We know his capabilities and we just wanted to prepare him for his GCSEs and my husband thought to put him in for the exams privately just for him to have a feel for what it's like.

"It was just fortunate he did so well for somebody in Year 9.

"It gives him the encouragement that by the time he will be in Year 11, and he takes the actual exams, he will probably be getting 9s or 8s."

Michael, who is starting Year 10 in September, says biology is his favourite subject and he is now on a mission to boost his grades by the time he gets to retake the exams in Year 11.

Other pupils across Maidstone, Malling and Weald picked up their results yesterday.
