Emergency repairs in Tonbridge Road, Maidstone, while workmen carry out emergency repairs on gas leak

Emergency repairs are being carried out on a gas leak on a major entry road to Maidstone town centre.

Temporary traffic lights have been placed in Tonbridge Road, close to Tesco Express, while repair men from SGN fix the issue.

Kent Highways warned motorists of the problem at 9.57am and warned drivers to expect delays as repairmen are also fitting a new gas main a little further down the road.

James Higgins, a spokesman for gas distribution company SGN, said: "Our engineers attended and made the situation safe.

"We have been monitoring the site regularly and are now in the process of carrying out a repair.

“No gas supplies have been lost and the work is not related to our mains replacement work further along Tonbridge Road.

“We would like to reassure everyone that we will be doing everything we can to complete these works as quickly as possible, and thank road users for their patience while we complete our essential works.”

There is also a temporary two way traffic signal in place on Tonbridge Road close to the junction with Bower Lane.

This is to enable workmen to carry out an emergency replacement of a gas main.

It will be in place until Monday, April 13 from 7am to 9pm on weekdays.

On Sundays they will be in action from 9am to 4pm.
