Drink-drive arrest for Gillingham man after he's detained following crash in Maidstone

Three members of the public tackled a man to the ground following a two-car crash in Maidstone and detained him until police arrived.

The man, a 35-year-old from Gillingham, was then arrested on suspicion of drink-driving and driving while disqualified. He is now in custody.

The drama unfolded at about 2.20pm in Lower Boxley Road.

Victoria Jones was passing in her car when the man was being detained.

She said: "I was driving down Staceys Street at about 2.20pm when I got stuck in traffic. I saw three men grappling another man and pinning him to the ground.

"When I drove past them, I saw two cars pulled over opposite the men and another man sitting on the kerb looking distressed. Some other men were directing traffic around the cars."

A police spokesman said: "We were called at 2.21pm to a report that a man had been detained by members of the public in Lower Boxley Road, Maidstone, following a two-car collision.

"Officers attended and arrested a 35-year-old man from Gillingham on suspicion of drink-driving and driving while disqualified. He remains in custody."
