Development plans revealed

There is a glimpse of daylight over the possible regeneration of Wrens Cross - the first headquarters of Kent Police.

The buildings, on the corner of Knightrider Street and Lower Stone Street, in Maidstone, have lain empty since 1997, when KCC finally quit the site and have since become a serious eyesore.

Maidstone council has tried for years to forge a plan for the re-development of the area and finally it seems it they might be near success.

Cllr Chris Garland said: "A development company is interested and we understand a planning application will be submitted soon.”

It is thought the scheme would be for mixed residential and retail use.
A number of the buildings are listed.

Re-development of the area was long delayed because at one stage, KCC was considering a new road scheme through the town centre, which would have ploughed through Wrens Cross, but lack of cash stopped the scheme ever getting off the ground.

Wrens Cross was the Kent County Constabulary headquarters from its foundation in 1857, until the constabulary moved to its current premises in Sutton Road in 1940.

Several years ago, a fire partially destroyed one of the buildings.
