Delicious mess as pie fight goes live on TV

World famous pies got another taste of fame when they appeared on national television.

Mike FitzGerald founder of the World Custard Pie Championships, which were launched in Coxheath back in the 1960s and are still going strong, was called on by ITV’s This Morning to impart his extensive pie knowledge.

He and fellow Maidstone councillors Dave Naghi and Brian Mortimer, who are among the organisers, mixed pies and supervised a mini championship between presenters Philip Schofield and Holly Willoughby.

Mr FitzGerald said: “We had an absolutely fantastic setting on the banks of the Thames, which was already attracting craft for the spectacular pageant for the Diamond Jubilee weekend.”

This year's championships will take place in September instead of June due to the Jubilee celebrations. A date is yet to be set.
