Police report 21 drivers for illegally entering a restricted part of Maidstone High Street

A crackdown on vehicles entering Maidstone High Street has caught out 21 motorists.

Only buses, hackney carriages, emergency vehicles and bicycles are permitted to travel through the area at the top end of the road, while private taxi firms and all other road users must turn right into Mill Street.

A high-visibility operation targeted vehicles entering the zone took place between 9.30pm and midnight on Friday, October 9.

PC Paul Hughes of the Maidstone community safety unit said: "This particular area of the High Street is often very busy with pedestrians, especially on a Friday or Saturday night, so in the interests of public safety it is important only those vehicles permitted to enter the restricted zone do so.

"In the weeks leading up to the operation we spent time talking to motorists and private taxi firms to remind them of their responsibilities.

"While the majority of drivers stick to the laws of the road, there are unfortunately others who enter restricted zones and put the safety of pedestrians at risk. We therefore hope this operation sends a clear message that we treat such incidents seriously and will take action when appropriate."

Meanwhile, officers also patrolled the Hart Street and Barker Road area of the town following concerns raised about nuisance vehicles.

A number of motorists were spoken to and the following day a section 59 warning was issued to one driver believed to be using his car in an irresponsible manner.

Should he receive a second warning, officers will have the power to seize his vehicle.

Earlier this month 13 buses become trapped in Maidstone High Street after a van partially blocked the road.

Other vehicles are often seen blocking the road at the junction of High Street and Week Street.
