A man was taken to hospital following a crash which turned a car into a fireball.

Police and firefighters were called to Sutton Road at 5.20am, where the vehicle was well alight.

It had left the road and was partly blocking the pavement by an area of parkland.

Paramedics treated the man but he had suffered serious injuries and was taken to a London hospital for further treatment.

The road was closed until 7.30am while emergency services were at the scene.

The car was destroyed by the fire.
