Campaign launched for tribute to artist Hart

A campaign has been mounted to get a statue erected to children's icon Tony Hart.

A pressure group, calling itself Maidstone Would Like a Statue or Memorial of Maidstonian Tony Hart, has been set up to commemorate the life of the TV artist, who was born in the town in 1925.

The Facebook group has even suggested a statue of the plasticene model Morph as a fitting tribute.

One Facebook contributor states: “A Morph statue all the way. There should definitely be some kind of memorial in Maidstone for Tony.”

Now a leader of the 500-strong group has spoken out in favour of the memorial.

The man, known only online as Lord Trotsky, described the TV icon of Take Hart fame as a "son of Maidstone".

He added: "He was born and taught in Maidstone. He inspired probably millions of children to create something; paint something."

Hart graduated from Maidstone College of Art in 1952 and died on January 16 at the age of 83.
