A colourful celebration of diverse cultures will be staged in the centre of Maidstone on Saturday.
The inaugural Maidstone Black History Month Celebration, organised by Ngaio Goll and Marlene O’Neil, who have recently launched the Maidstone Alliance for People of African Heritage, will be held in Jubilee Square to coincide with Black History Month, which runs until Wednesday, October 31.
With a street party feel, the event will feature African and Caribbean food stalls; story telling, poetry and songs from difference countries and a limbo competition.
There will also be a pop quiz on black history knowledge and a barber and hairdresser’s corner, plus demonstrations of Brazilian Capoeira and salsa dancing.
Local businesses, artists and other professionals will also be showing and selling related artefacts, fashion and activities for children throughout the day.
The event will run from 10am until 4pm and it is hoped it may become an annual event. For details email contactmapah@gmail.com
