A flag - but no flagpole

A prized purple flag won by Maidstone for its nightlife management will be hoisted in the town centre later this month, but managers have been left with one small problem.

First catch your flagpole.

The purple flag, which was given to the town on its second bid earlier this year, will be raised in Jubilee Square during a celebration afternoon on Saturday, March 30.

But town centre manager Bill Moss has admitted there isn't actually a flagpole to put it on yet.

Seeing the funny side, Mr Moss said: “I think it’s hilarious that we have the flag but we don’t have the flag pole.
“We are asking the Army because I think they do this thing quite regularly.
“If we haven’t got one, we’ll have to improvise.”
He added: "If there is an organisation who has the means to put it up and take it away that would be great. There would be a donation for their funds.”
Purple cocktails will be available at the event, between 3pm and 4pm, which will be attended by representatives from the town’s top nightclubs.
The flag recognises safety and the care of revellers.
