Traffic certainly has the upper hand on Maidstone Bridge today.

But as this picture, taken from the Kent Messenger’s archives, shows, the sheep outnumbered the traffic crossing the bridge in Maidstone back in the 1930s.

As John Evans, author of the Images of Maidstone book, published by the KM, some years ago, wrote: “Imagine this today; sheep being driven across Maidstone bridge.”

Today, the thought seems even more unlikely
