CHINESE captain Fan Zhiyi will attempt to secure a Gillingham contract as the World Cup star begins a two-week trial with the club.

The former Crystal Palace centre-half, who made 87 appearances for the Eagles, is currently contracted to Scottish side Dundee, but has spent the last three months on loan to Shanghai Shenhua back in China.

But Fan, who holds the record for the most appearances for his country with 109 caps, is keen on a move back after running into contractual difficulties.

His agent offered him to Gills and player-manager Andy Hessenthaler is keen to have a look at him. Fan is expected to play some part in Gillingham Reserves’ game at Priestfield against Cardiff on Wednesday, weather permitting.

Hessenthaler told the club's official website: “We know he is a good player because he played against us a couple of seasons ago. He has plenty of experience as his international record proves.”
