Wings slip to another home defeat

WENT CLOSE: Lee Spiller
WENT CLOSE: Lee Spiller

Welling 0 Basingstoke Town 1

TWO days after beating second-placed Cambridge City, Welling slumped to a customary home defeat at Park View Road on Monday.

The match was settled on 23 minutes when German De La Vega’s right-wing cross was headed home by Martin Whiddett.

Welling should have been level but James Smith failed to convert Lee Spiller’s header and Spiller himself failed to apply the finishing touch.

Welling continued to struggle in the second half with Spiller again going close before substitute Onome Sodje volleyed wide seven minutes after his introduction.

Basingstoke should have wrapped the points up late on but Whiddett and Cristian Lewis both spurned easy opportunities.

On Saturday, a Martin Carthy goal eight minutes from time was enough to give Welling an impressive win at Cambridge City.
