Wings grab crucial victory

Yeading 0 Welling United 1

SUBSTITUTE Hector Mackie scored a late winner as Welling regained a play-off position in Conference South on Saturday.

The Wings left it late to see off battling Yeading after Mackie drove home in the 84th minute.

A terrible playing surface meant little decent football was played by either side and neither goalkeeper had much to do in a stale first half.

Welling increased the pressure after the break and leading scorer Danny Kedwell saw his 55th-minute drive hit the upright before Leon Solomon's shot was deflected narrowly over the bar.

Yeading missed a good opening in the 66th minute when Marvin Morgan sliced his effort wide from the edge of the penalty area.

Wings boss Adrian Pennock introduced Mackie with 17 minutes left and it had the desired effect.

A sliced clearance was well controlled by Kedwell in the area and he set up Mackie to score with an unstoppable low shot.

The Wings host Farnborough on Bank Holiday Monday at Park View Road, kick-off 3pm.
