Wings fightback comes to nothing

Welling United 2 Newport County 3

WELLING'S Conference South play-off hopes received a major blow as a spirited comeback came to nothing at Park View Road on Saturday.

The Wings had only themselves to blame after conceding two goals in the first 25 minutes.

Richard Evans' deflected free-kick gave the visitors the lead on 14 minutes and they doubled it when striker Matt Green took advantage of some sloppy defending to race clean through.

Welling boss Adrian Pennock made a double substitution at half-time and it made an immediate impact.

Jamie Day's corner three minutes into the second half was dropped into his own net by keeper Mark Ovendale.

Three minutes later the Wings were back on level terms when Matt Bodkin saw his right-foot shot came back off the post for Steve Harper to convert.

However, Welling's hard work was wasted on 63 minutes when they failed to clear a long free-kick and Paul Cochlin turned in the loose ball.

The Wings almost snatched a point in injury time but skipper Day shot wide from 12 yards after another weak punch from Ovendale.
