Westcombe back on the right track

Westcombe 28 Cambridge 17

WESTCOMBE Park returned to winning ways with a hard-fought 28-17 win over Cambridge in National League 2 on Saturday.

Combe started strongly and opened the scoring when captain Tom Hayman forced his way over after a five-metre scrum had put the home side in a strong position.

A line-out infringement then allowed the vistiors to score their first points from a penalty.

Cambridge continued to push forward and took the lead when good inter-passing ripped open the home side’s defence allowing them to score a converted try.

James Whittingham then kicked two penalties as Combe re-took the lead.

Cambridge then scored another converted try in injury time to gain a six point advantage at half-time.

In the second half, Combe came out strongly and were quickly in command when Whittingham scored his third penalty of the game.

Winger Tom Loizides added Combe’s second try of the game, with Whittingham adding the extras.

The hosts secured the victory when hooker Jon Moyce went over in the corner with Whittingham judging the conversion to a tee.
