Kent captain James Tredwell endured a torrid time as England suffered an 88-run defeat to fall 1-0 down in the NatWest one-day series against Australia.

England won the toss in the second of the five-match series at Old Trafford on Sunday but opted to bowl on what many predicted would be a good batting surface - a decision which could have ultimately proved crucial.

The Australian batsmen went after the spinner from the off, taking him for 37 from his first 3.4 overs.

The 31-year-old did reply with the wicket of Aaron Finch - his 33rd scalp in 21 ODIs - as he holed-out to Joe Root at long-on after a run-a-ball 45 to make it 116-3 in the 22nd over.

However Aussie skipper Michael Clarke (105) and George Bailey (82) put on 155 for the fourth wicket in a 22-over stand and Tredwell eventually finished with figures of 1-60 from eight overs.

The visitors’ total of 315-7 provided England with what would have been a record total to chase in ODI cricket, and the hosts were never in the hunt, falling to 38-3 in the 11th over and 167-7 after 36, which brought Tredwell to the middle.

The New Romney ace scored a single from his first delivery but was run-out immediately after, attempting a second run after a Joss Buttler flick to midwicket.

England were eventually dismissed for 227 in the 45th over.

Further games follow at Edgbaston on Wednesday, Cardiff on Saturday and at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton on Monday. The opening fixture at Headingley last Friday was washed-out.

Tredwell misses Kent’s LV= County Championship game against Essex, starting on Wednesday.

Meanwhile the Kent women’s team are celebrating winning the t20 competition after a semi-final win against Notts they recorded an eight-wicket win over Sussex in the final.
