Welling v Maidstone

WELLING boss Adrian Pennock has issued a public apology ahead of tonight's Kent Senior Cup quarter-final with Maidstone for fielding an understrength side.

Only two or three members of Welling's first-team squad are expected to feature in a team consisting mainly of the club's under-18 side.

The Wings, who currently occupy a play-off position, still have 12 Conference South games to play and Pennock insisted that he does not want to pick up any injuries.

"It is no disrespect to the competition but it has come at such a crucial time of the season," said Pennock. "With such a small squad I cannot risk getting an injury to anyone.

"We told the KCFA and I have spoken to Maidstone, who are also going to use squad players, so everyone is aware of it.

"Of course I would like to win some silverware but the league is more important to us at the moment."

Reduced admission charges will apply for the game, which will take place at VCD Athletic's Oakwood ground.
