'Super sub' Watson rises to the occasion

CHRIS KINNEAR: only his side's second home draw of the season

Margate 1 Lewes 1

MARGATE fans continue to hail Darren Watson as "super-sub" and for very good reason. Not for the first time recently the big striker came off the bench to earn his side a valuable Nationwide South point against Lewes at Homelands on Tuesday night.

Watson had only been on the pitch five minutes after replacing John Keister, when he rose to head home Peter Benevides' free kick past former 'Gate 'keeper Scott Ward to earn Chris Kinnear's side only their second home draw of the season.

Lewes took the lead just before the hour. Margate defended a ball into the area, but it deflected to Anthony Storey who fired a lowe effort past Peter Trego.

The Sussex side, promoted via the Ryman League play-offs last season, also included ex-Gravesend defender Francis Duku, who played for Margate in pre-season

Che Stadhart went close early on, and Margate had an eighth minute effort ruled out for pushing by the 'Gate top scorer.

Benevides was involved in much of the action, particularly in the first half, while Peter Trego pulled off a fine save to keep out an effort from Marc Whiteman.

Margate now face three away games in the space of a week beginning with a trip to West London to face Hayes on Saturday.
