Charlton Athletic 3 - 1 Hartlepool United

CHARLTON enjoyed a 3-1 victory over League 1 side Hartlepool United in the Carling Cup second round at The Valley on Tuesday.

The Addicks, who had Thomas Myhre, Jonathan Spector, Gonzalo Sorondo and Lloyd Sam making their first starts for the club, were back on terms within three minutes, though, after Jonatan Johnasson converted from the penalty sopt after Steven Istead had fouled youngster Sam in the area.

Sam had a hand in the goal that put Charlton ahead with 17 minutes left as he crossed for substitute Darren Bent to head home.

And fellow substitute Jay Bothroyd completed the scoring within five minutes of coming on when he sent a superb 80th minute shot flying into the top corner from the edge of the box.
